Foix

Foix, in the Ariege department, is a town built on a rocky spine which has been inhabited for thousands of years, ever since prehistoric man found shelter in its caves.

In the 11th century a castle was built at the top of the outcrop, and a superb medieval town grew up around it. The castle is open to the public and its three high towers offer a stunning view of both the town and the surrounding countryside. In the round tower, graffiti left by the prisoners who were kept there hundreds of years ago can still be seen.
