The regional natural park of the Grands Causses was created in 1995 and covers 315,640 hectares of the Aveyron department, with 64,710 inhabitants in 94 communes. The name “causse” comes from the Latin word calcinus, or chalk, and designates a large limestone plateau, of which there are several in the park.
